i guess have crystal make a user group for them with the title of their choice. so we may end up with a bunch of different user groups

can you not give custom title in the admin panel without creating user groups?
Our forum runs the same version, but some different mods, but you can give users a custom title without creating custom groups.

on the left side of your screen you should be able to see people pictures and such. right below where it says "lost bucks" you just click the +rep button to give one to that member. just be careful not to hit the -rep button!
