It's funny how a show, LOST in this case, can take an innocuous piece of music and give it sinister undertones.

The two readily available examples I can think of are Petula Clark's 'Downtown' and Mama Cass' 'Make Your Own Kind of Music'.

Are there any more you can think of offhand? I'd like to find the episodes with the songs in question and rewatch them, then listen to the song and see if it gives me the same creepy feeling these other two do.

I agree it is cool how that happens. I think some of the songs just have an eerie sound to them and others appear creepy because we associate them with what is happening on screen.

With these two songs mentioned I think they are creepy also because they are really old songs and because there is an innocence to them. The women singing in them have very sweet sounding voices so what we hear contrasts with the tense scenes we are watching causing an odd and disturbing atmosphere.

I felt the same when I watched the movie Girl Interupted. They sing the song 'Downtown' in the mental hospital and also another song used in lost, 'the end of the world' when they find the girl hanged in the bathroom.

I couldn't remember any off hand but looked on Wikipedia and found some other songs that might fit the bill. I'm gonna have a look for them too.

Walking After Midnight (Patsy Cline) What Kate Did (series 2)
The End of the World (Skeeter Davis) What Kate Did (series 2)
Everyday (Buddy Holly) Cabin Fever (series 4)
Catch a Falling Star (Perry Como) Maternity Leave (series 2)
La Mer (the song Shannon translates) Whatver the Case May Be (series 1)

Just something interesting I read in a transcript of one of the podcasts that made me think of this topic. I think it explains really well the reasoning behind their choice of music for the show:

Damon Lindelof: We do what are called "needle drops" on the show. It's an old school way in the TV business of saying any music in the show that is recorded, as opposed to something that you originally generate. The Mama Cass song is something that we picked very specifically, not only because it lyrically felt right, but also knowing what we know about the hatch, we have certain limitations of exactly what year the records stop in the hatch. And there's something about Mama Cass' music that is very haunting given her own personal history. That just felt like the perfect song, and we selected it thusly. There's some other music coming up in the show over the course of the next couple weeks. You might wanna keep your eyes peeled for Geronimo Jackson's audacious debut. They're a band that not a lot of people have heard about. They just pressed one very obscure album, I think it was in the mid- to late-70s.

Carlton Cuse: We enjoy finding and unearthing some songs that are not the types of things that you hear on oldies radio all the time. They help us establish the mood and the setting in the period that the hatch was built. And, I don't know, we love the certain eeriness of playing that music in context with our show that we really respond to.

I managed to get a Mama Cass album on Play.com for £2.99 with that song on it. So now I can close my eyes and pretend I'm in the hatch with Desmond!  dork! hehe

Thanks Ben Smiley

I guess I'm just kinda old fashioned and like to have a cd rather than a download. Unless its just a random song that I want which I might download. But it looked like a really good cd and my family all like her music so I thought it was a bargain. Its my dads birthday soon so I might give it to him and conveniently borrow it later!

Yeah, when Des puts it on and it blasts through the speakers and Jack's like  Little Smokie

Very funny! I always think of Des making his egg-smoothie thingy when I hear it.
