If the polar bears were from the others' experiments on the second island, why and how did they get across the water to the survivors' island?

That's what I thought at first. The Dharma Initiative were conducting all these fertility tests on animals. But maybe when Ben, Richard and the rest of the hostiles took over they released the animals because they had no use for them. But it would be dangerous and silly to release animals like polar bears into the wild.

So maybe they transfered them to the other island to get rid of them. But then why wouldn't they just kill them? I mean, they had no problem killing all the Dharma members so they wouldn't have any ethical problems with killing the animals.
