This thread was getting very long so i broke it down into sections. On the blu-ray edition of Lost: The Complete Third Season there is a special feature entitled Access: Granted in which Cuse and Lindelof give some vague answers on questions surronding the show. i dont know if this is consider a spoiler or not so read at your own risk!

Damon Lindelof: Desmond Davie Hume is solely responsible for the crash of flight 815.

Carlton Cuse: He quit pushing the button and the electromagnetic forces that built up as a result of him not pushing the button uh fried the instrumentation on the plane and caused the plane to become unstable, split in two and plunge to our Island.

Damon Lindelof: One of the things we’re learning is that the Island is very hard to get to in fact uh specially hard to get to safely so uh he would have to you would have to have a very large magnet pulling a very large metal object towards it in order to get through the barriers defenses is that the word we should use?

Carlton Cuse: I would say yes. Um um you know barriers perhaps.

Damon Lindelof: If not, if Desmond

Carlton Cuse:Do you see whats going on with those screens over on the side next to you?

Damon Lindelof: I’m trying not to be distracted by them. I’m actually watching the one up over to the left of you which uh I think is the home shopping network.

Carlton Cuse: That is uh

Damon Lindelof: Either that or its Doctor Marvin Candle I can’t tell the difference.

(See, they get off topic and distracted but they do give us some good points to ponder...)
