what a lot of people dont understand is that charlie HAD to die......trust me, im just as sad as everyone else about his death, but Charlie didnt swim out or maybe work his way to the top to get that deep breath becasue he knew that his drowning had to happen in order for everyone to get rescued

Thats what i dont get. How can him drowning or getting to the surface affect the other Losties or the rescue boat? It's impossible. Then i guess that tyhe writers dont think of everything, do they?

or maybe charlie just wasnt thinking in that moment and thought that he HAD to die in order to save clair and aaron?  I personally think that he was tired of avoiding death and just ended it

On reflection, I don't think Charlie closed the door primarily because of Desmond's prophecy, but to save Desmond.  He had a very short amount of time to think, and his thought process probably went something like this... (Grenade=BOOM.  BOOM=BAD.  Penny on screen.  Desmond will want to talk to Penny regardless of grenade.  Grenade+Desmond=BAD.  Close door.  Oh s**t, that drowning thing.  Ah well.)

First post, Hello !

With regards to Patchy's air tank etc, surley the others/hostiles would have had tanks stashed on the island close to looking glass in case of emergancy's such as that one.

ok so if there was an air vent which allowed the water to rise above the porthole the water would have gotton through the air vent therefore spilling into the rest of he looking glass........but i do agree with this quote the room was air tight and charlie was able to shut the door therefore again the water (following the laws of physics) would never have risen above the open porthole
