Did you notice that when John was walking with Ben to find Jacob he stopped for a minute and picked up some black sand and started feeling it? Why? It has to have some significance, but what? Maybe he was just tracking his way back?

I noticed that....And the fact that Ben didn't seem to want John to even so much as look at the sand....I think that the sand is something significant....Like when voodoo people place sand in their door ways to keep evil spirits out.

I have never seen burnt human remains. LOL. I think if it was burnt anything it would have left black marks on his hands. I am watching it again right now to see what I missed. When I get to that part I will watch for residue or something.

OK, I just watched the scene again and all I noticed is that he smelled it. It didn't show his hand right after he had the sand in it.

It looked like there was a line of it passing in front of them -- and that Ben stepped over it
I would guess that at some point in the history of the Island, someone made a circle with gunpowder or some other combustible and made a ring of fire around "Jacob's Lair," either to contain him or control him somehow

I bet you guys are right. I've never seen gun powder that didn't look like tiny little discs before...But sure enough, I did a quick search, and I found this image:
This looks the same as Johns substance. Not to mention that John smelled it.....
