They way Lost is with mythology and religions, I think it is voodoo stuff to keep Jacob from leaving to speak to other people. I think he is the BOX. U saw what he did with his mind in the shack, I think that power he possess' is what brings out the smoke, Jacob in a spectral form, which is why he didn't kill Locke when he was the black smoke. How else could he get Locke to help him. He is being held captive. Jacob doesn't like technology, I don't remember the black smoke liking the sonar fence either. Jacob is God refences in other episodes relates to 5:44 and 5:39 both chapters of John from the bible. Eerie things a happening.

The producers really have put a lot of thought into this tv show, more than any show i have ever seen. References to the bible, scientists, emp's, nursery rhymes, books, films, cartoons, etc. etc.
