Maybe the casket is so short because the body isnt in one piece?  In the clipping above it says something about "a beam" from what i can tell.  Also I can see a "J" as the first letter so maybe it is John Locke.

One other thing...the article didnt appear to be in an obitchuary, it looked like it was a front page article, so maybe it was a freak accident cause of death?

If they weren't in one piece the funeral director wouldn't have offered to open the casket. They don't do any type of viewing if the the body or face are to bad.

Okay your righta bout that probably....honestly, I think its Juliet now...I mean it would explain why Jack is depressed and why Kate is indifferent.  Not one of the losties liked her or trusted her anyways, that would explain why no one went...  Isn't Juliet from New York?

No, I think that Juliet is from Florida, and  the article says that its a man. Oh and when the director asked if it was friend or family Jack said Neither. I think he would consider Juliet a friend unless something happened after what we saw and the flash forward.

I think it's Michael, he was from New York.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Dawson_(Lost)

Now, why that would drive Jack to contemplate suicide, I don't know.

OK, maybe I answered my own question.  Jack is looking for the island.  As far as we know, Michael is the only one to have left the island.  He knows where it is and with his death that information is gone.  That sends Jack even further into depression, leading to his suicide attempt....maybe

I say it's Sawyer.  The only thing that sways me a little is the size of the casket.  My first thought was that only the death of a child could make someone as upset as he got.  I don't think he would get that upset over a girl.  Then I was thinking that maybe the death didn't have him that upset in the funeral home so maybe it was just all the thoughts from the island coming back that had him so upset.  Sawyer makes sense though.  At least a little.  I would think that kate would be more upset about it although she did shed a quick tear but I think that was more for jack.  Jack answering that he was neither friend nor family and that no one came to the funeral makes me think of Sawyer.  He didn't make too many friends, no family...kinda makes sense.

The article metions the man lived in a loft in NYC.  The article also says something about a beam.  Most lofts have exposed beams, so why make mention of that in the article.  Maybe because the person HUNG himself from a beam.  That is why it is metioned?
