I don't think he was lying. As my man Locke would say, everything happens for a reason. I don't think the writers would put him in there if there wasn't some meaning in what he was saying. I think he is a bit dodgy and is probbly one of those fortune tellers that take advantage of people for their money but I still think what he told Claire was legit.

You don't remember the dead girl coming back to life? When Mr Eko is a priest he is asked to visit a girl who died and came back to life during the autopsy. It turns out the girl is the psychic's daughter but he tells Eko than the girl and his wife are making the story up. So he goes to the coroner who plays his tape of the autopsy and you hear her waking up and screaming
I usually fast forward through that part cos its scares me so much!
