and the way Richard looked at it, you could tell he knew it was not just a tornado or something. Richard knew it was smokie. But how did John know about smokie??

well now he dont have a post at all. you guys deleted both of them.
Locke was created from the very beginning as special, he was always chosen. Thats why Richard was watching him growing up. Locke knew about smokie probably from dreams. that is my only guess.

this got me thinking about season 1- when John and Smokie were staring at eachother- "I've looked into the eye of this Island", and when smokie wanted to drag John down that hole. There seems to be some kind of connection between them.

Now that I've read the post that Midgetvinn made about the film he was watching and reincarnation etc... I think that Locke could've been on the island in a past life and that's how he managed to draw Smokie.

I offered a possible explination in the items thread about this topic. The cliffs note version is Locke created smokie. It is a manifestation of him.
