yeah, I thought he was pretty annoying too (does it show?)
but what I really found annoying was Perrineau's attitude in interviews
He said something like he thought the character was too one-dimensional and that the format of the show (large cast, flashbacks, or something) made it difficult for him to "find" his character's voice.
He also said something like he had trouble playing a character who would abandon his own son, give him up to be adopted by another father, because he, Harold Perrineau, is such a great father in real life and loves his kids so much.

I was like, dude, you're an actor!  Shouldn't you be able to play a character who is diametrically opposed to your personal self???

What?  It's easier to play a Demon???

Anyway, I'm glad he's back, becaue I would have hated that hole in the story to be filled with silly putty.
I saw he's in a lot of the mini-sodes, or whatever they're called,
and I don't know... is it just me... or does he seem to be phoning in those performances?

good point. it's not like your character in a show or movie is always going to reflect you in real life. it's not like naveen is really a torturer or that evangeline would ever kill someone...etc etc etc
