This is an idea that my friend Tara put forward yesterday.
She suspects that the reason Frank was eager to take this mission
was that he feels guilty for not having been the pilot of Oceanic 815 (as he was supposed to have been)
, guilty that the plane subsequently crashed and that his friend (who was married) died -- or perhaps died --
But what she really thinks beyond this is that The Powers That Be, who can see Fate and Know that the plane was supposed to crash on the Island, also Knew that Frank should not be the pilot -- so they used some kind of extortion (blackmail perhaps) to make Frank "step down from the cockpit" on that Fateful day
So, Frank is doubly guilty (or more)
and now wants to atone himself by finding the plane, rescuing the Survivors, maybe even finding his friend (or at least finding out what happened to him)
especially since he probably figures that if he HAD BEEN the pilot, he would not have allowed the plane to crash
Personally, I don't know about the whole blackmail thing (though it's an interesting idea)
I just think Frank was probably too drunk that day to fly the plane.

Maybe he knows all about what happened to Minkowski and Des and wanted to try to do it to himself in order to attempt changing who was the pilot.
If so, maybe he didn't expose himself to the right amount of radiation/electromagnetism for it to work right.
Idk, that might be a bit far fetched... but just an idea! =)
