Desmond might not know that Widmore has been using him all along.....think of the whole show as a game of chess....Ben vs. Widmore...Des might be Widmore's knight, while Jack is possibly Ben's...each are using people as pawns to get one thing, the island....by having Alex killed Widmore changed the rules of the game...and i think next season we will see Ben do the samething
