Philosophers names

its interesting that in the series they use names of philosophers who wrote about different political doctrines. Edmund Burke - conservatism, John Locke and Rousseau - generally speaking democracy, Desmond (David) Hume, who's mentor was John Locke, and whom he criticised..
Maybe someone could add more to it..

Could you give us some more background on the philosophers? I have to admit, I only knew about John Locke, the rest are news to me. If you could give us a run down on it, I might be willing to put it in the blog(if that's okay with you).

David Hume also did studies on Space and Time. His book A Treatise of Human Nature has chapters on Space and Time and also Memory and Imagination.

Funny thing, today in school, I learned something more about Locke and Rousseau (the real ones...).
I have learned about them before, but today we saw they both believed 2 totally other things about genetics.
It's about the nature-nurture discussion.
Rousseau believed in nature, which means that everything you are and can is because of your genes. So, for Rousseau it doesn't matter where you were born, by who you were raised... It is decided who you'd be before you were even born.
Locke on the other hand believed in nurture, which is the opposit of nature. He believed that nothing is genetically decided. Everything you are and can is because of your education, how you were raised etc. (--> Tabula rasa = "Clean table" you are nothing and you can do nothing when you are born)
Now I don't really see (yet?) how this could be in the show, have to think about that.
I posted this because I thought Rousseau and Locke were more seen like they had the same ideas (don't know how you guys thought of it)
Anyway, don't think if this is really relevant, thought it was cool to post though :-).

Yeah, that's pretty good info Debby. They never taught me anything about anyone when I went to school....That might be because I never really showed up...
I am partial to the nurture belief myself, with some inclination to lean to the nature side of things. I can see how both philosophers beliefs make a play in LOST, or at least they more than likely will in the upcoming episodes.
Nice post Debby, I added a rep...

While I was re watching the Dharma initiative orientation films, I heard the name "Skinner".
I knew I've heard that name before, and I looked him up and I was right.. I've learned about him previous semester.
He was a behaviorist psychologist.
He's also the inventor of the "skinner-box", a part of the study about classical and operant conditioning.
It's something like this: he put a rat or a pigeon in a box. There's nothing in the box, besides a button, and when it pushes the button there comes food out. So, at first it will push the button accidentally, but after awhile it will push the button because it knows there will be food.
(behaviorist don't believe animals can think, so Skinner said the rat of pigeon will just 'feel' like pushing the button or something like that, but I wouldn't be a behaviorist so I think the rat of pigeon just starting to know food will come when it pushes the button...)
---> like they where doing in the Swan! Pushing the button...

Or when Sawyer figured out how to get a fish biscuit. The bears did it faster.
It does explain how Ruseau and Locke are at ease around each other like in the Brig.
Look at Locke with that nurture thing, he has been trying to change his life and do what he wants, he was in a wheelchair and he wouldn't let people tell him what he can't do - nurture.
Ruseau on the other hand has lived on the island for over 12 years in nature, she has a child which is also bature, and she lives a sone with nature.

Although I don't know the correct spelling of the character's name in the show, I would like to point out another philosopher: Eco - as in Umberto Eco. Also, Mihail Bakunin was an anarchist/philosopher in Czarist Russia.
Wasn't there also an episode called
Tabula Rasa
, i.e. the clean slate? That also pertains to the nature-nurture discussion mentioned above.
I'm sure there are more references there still to be mentioned.

I've learned something interresting about JJ Rousseau. We knew he believed in the nature of a child, which means that a child would grow up in the same way if it would be somewhere else. So in Lost this could mean that Alex is still others then the Others and looks more like her mother who she's never seen in her childhood. It perfectly fits in what the really Rousseau was saying.
But some time ago I was learning about the history of education and we've seen a theory of JJ Rousseau. As you would expect, he doesn't believe in education like we do, a child can't be learned anything, everything it does learn comes from the child itself. So that meaning of education isn't actually necessary according to him.
He had his own explanation of the word education. He said that education is keeping away the bad influences from the child. So here he said the child can be learned something, only bad things, things that won't come from the child itself. He believed that if you protect the child from bad influences it will become the perfect human.
So there is nothing imperfect in a child, it is what the world and the people around him teach him that made him imperfect.
I was trying to link this to the show, but it didn't fit. Alex would have had bad influences from the Other, so she would have changed. But she is still others then the others and more like her mother. How about that? Does someone else have an opinion about that?

With no schooling system and using the methods you speak of, Aaron could be the perfect child.

That is correct, and makes me think of something else Rousseau said.
It's called "Le contrat social". He believed that he could make the perfect civilization. If all people helped with making the rules of this civilization, and all live by these rules on free will, there would be no more pain. Everyone would be happy, there would be no violence etc...
You think the Losties could be a perfect civilization? Not the others though, looks like only Ben made the rules.

not really.
The amount of ppl who have been murdered on the island or kidnapped, tortured, assaulted etc. There is nothing perfect about that.

That's true, there has been allot of violence lol. I don't think it's possible though, the perfect civilization Rousseau was talking about. It would last for 1, maybe 2 generations. But I guess Rousseau was just a big talker, he didn't even raise his own children, so it was easy for him to say how other people should be educating the children.

Lol Ben. True, the Rousseau in Lost is female, but the real Rousseau, the one I was talking about, is infact male. --> Jean Jacques Rousseau. I'm pretty sure of that
