yeah maybe theres abunch of people who could be the "chosen one" but theres no way to be sure so they just have to keep bringing them and getting rid of them untill eventually they find the right one.

so ben was good for a while, but he didnt work.  so maybe there were a bunch more before him.  including widmore?

The special features on one of the episodes in Season 3(don't remember which) have the writers referring to Richard as being "Panchen Llama" figure, and relate him to rod Cheney.  He is power behind the throne, second in command.  The Panchen Llama is in place to find the next Dalai Llama, and the episode that has young Locke being tested is VERY heavily influenced by the idea of reincarnative destiny, being an heir to a seat such as Dalai Llama, leader of the Island, President, etc.

I do not believe he ages, through some special connection to the Island.  But I think he is real.
