i just rewatched the episode again and a couple of things occurred to me so ive developed a little theory, i would welcome criticism and bits to add to it.
1) When Sun tells Widmore 'we're not the only ones who left the island'. I originally thought, along with other people on here, that she was referring to Desmond etc. but I'm beginning to think that maybe Sun knows something about Widmore, maybe through her father, and she knew he used to live on the island then left and this comment was a way of showing that she knows about him and his past.
2) Widmore told Ben that the island was his, or something to that effect when you see Ben visit him. We also think that there is some history between the two of them which could have taken place on the island.
3) Ben tells Locke that whoever moves the island can't go back
4) Ben tells Widmore that he will never find the island
So my theory is that Widmore was an original hostile, and the leader of them before Ben. Then Richard meets Ben in the jungle and realises that he is also special. Richard goes to tell Widmore and he plans the purge and then brings Ben to them. Then I think that the island must need to be moved to stop more Dharma volunteers being brought to the island (maybe the submarine had left to bring more people there) so Widmore needed to move the island in order to protect the purge from being found out by Dharma representatives. Widmore therefore has to leave the island and not return and Ben becomes leader of the hostiles. Maybe Widmore resents Ben for forcing him to plan the purge and blames him for him having to leave the island and that's why he wants to get back.

i like it. but the only thing that gets me is, where does penny fit into all this. when does he have her. and where is her mom. it had to have been after he left the island because the island kills all the babies and mommies.

Wow this must have taken some deep thought. I know the question right now is Penny, but maybe Penny doesn't even really belong to Charles... consider adoption or maybe she is someone elses child. I think it is a very small detail in this great new theory between Ben and Widmore... the writers always find ways around these small details.

In desmonds flashbacks we see widmore trying to buy the diary of a captain
...
so i supose the ship was black rock and he was looiking for it too relocate the island after it was moved....
i think your theory is great but Its also possible that widmore was the leader of dharma......
If widmore was with the others he would still co operate with them after he left the island.....Ben was forced to leave too
but he didnt became an enemy of them........

a problem I have with post purge island moving ideas is the fact that the plane was still making food drops. How did the plane know how to find them?

Yeah, that's a good question. I guess it depends on who is responsible for the food drops. It must be someone who is aware of the island's ability to be moved and knows how to track it down somehow. I mean wouldn't they just find it the same way that the freighter and the guys in the helicoptor at the end of season 2 did?
