sorry again for the late reply, but... I the writers have just hinted at this in episodes during the show, and in that scene the two guys jumped up and looked at some kind of chart thingy. I came to the conclusion that the only thing emitted from the hatch imploding, is electromagnetic energy
The only thing i found odd about the two guys in the artic is that they have been waiting for that signal(the electromagnetic release from the island) so they knew it happened before when 815 crashed...but those guys work for Penny, which means she started looking for Des back before the crash...so obviously, Widmore was well aware of what Penny was doing, and was using her to find the island....which relates everything to the original end of S3 and it not being Penny's boat.....her father beat her to finding the island
Let me start off by complimenting all of the regular posters here. You guys come up with very thought provoking ideas and are an inspiration to many of my theory's. Everone take a bow for a job ell done.

one contributor I miss is glowfly. She was also very good at making my brain juices flow. does anyone know why she doesn't post here anymore?
Now for the fun part......... slicing, dicing and shredding abbandon souls post....tee hee hee!
just kidding! I am only playing devils advocate on you abandon. You are jumping to the conclusion that the scientists in the artic ere waiting for the "signal" because a similar signal occurred when the flight crashed. I will not be so bold as to say your conclusion is wrong but I have a different suspicion.
Let me start with the problems I have with your idea.
Lets assume that when the plane crashed there was a magnetic pulse or signal that was emitted. If the scientist needed to be in that artic region in order to record it how would they of known there was a prior signal unless they were already there for the first occurance?
I would like to raise a new possibility for your consideration. I think Faradays is a much bigger key in this story then we have learned. I think he may know alot more about the future then has been revealed. I think he may even be a spy working for Penny on her fathers boat. I think it's plausable that those two scientists were up in the artic because Faraday calculated that would be the clearest place to record the signal when it occured. I also think that we only saw the scientists after they recorded the signal for the 2nd time. They may of been there prior to the plane crash aware that there was going to be a first signal and then a second one later. Two signals are significant because if they recorded them from two different spots they could triangulate the location of the island. Using a triangulation method ould also hold consistent to having a scientist type like Faraday involved in locating the island.
This is only my opinion and in no way do I discount your abandons I just wanted to give you a challange to chew on.
