I have thought about this question a couple different times.  Do gays choose to be gay? or are their brains just hardwired that way? this could also turn into a debate over nature vs. nurture.

i always believed in nurture. you are who you are because of how you were brought up.

what do you guys think?

I think that how a child is raised does have a large impact on how they end up once they are older. As for gays, I personally think that there are many that get influenced by society and end up saying they are gay or bisexual for the attention or convenience. There are people that I think are pre-set to be oriented the way they are, either gay or straight.

Another thing kind of on topic is gender identity disorder. This is when a person is born, for instance, a female and mentally is a male. There is a strong identification with the opposite sex and a longing to be that opposite sex. In children, it is common for there to be continual insisting that they are indeed the opposite sex and often cross dress or role play. In all people with this disorder there is a great discomfort with their physical sex and they feel disconnected with the gender roles that apply. In some cases, adults with this disorder end up getting sex changes and hormone treatments, which are the only real "cure" for the disorder. Therapy doesn't usually help these people, because all that would do is try to convince them that they are already the right sex. There are theories that this disorder is caused by unusual exposure to prenatal hormones that affect the fetus in development, causing the gender confusion.

Obviously this is a more extreme case, but along the same lines..
I think that gays might have some of the prenatal hormone imbalances that caused them the be attracted to the same sex.

right, i agree that people do to it for the attention/ to be different.  because God pretty much says homosexuality is from the pits of hell.

i dont believe that people are actually "gay", but they believe they are.

and your right ben, this could become very controversial!

leviticus or numbers i think.  diferent Bibles say it differently though depending on what style you read.  i heard it phrased that way from a preacher.  it also mentions in in 1 Corinthians 6:8-10 -

9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders, nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Well, as the big atheist I seem to be, I'm not buying that stuff.
For me, there is nothing wrong with homosexuals. I think that, if there's a God, he wouldn't judge people for their sexual inclination. He would judge people for being good or bad, and it's not because you're gay that you're bad.

Maybe it could have something to do with that prenatal hormone deadarm was talking about, I don't know.
But I don't think they are gay for the attention. I think of it this way: I'm attracted to guys, I fall inlove with guys. When a hot guy passes me I'm going something like "Omg, he's soo hot." You know what I'm talking about. It just happens, I dont have to do anything, those feelings just come. But what if I had those feeling about girls? I don't think I could do anything about it, unless trying to pretend I'm attracted to guys. Maybe I could keep that up for a couple of yours, but I think eventually I would live an unhappy life.

And yeah, I've seen it too, in puberty some kids say they're gay, mostly for the attention. But we all go through a phase we think we're gay in puberty. And another thing that happens in puberty, but most kids, is that we want to be special and unique, or diffrent. Some teens would use those homosexual feelings to satisfy the feeling to be special.
I believe you can only really know after puberty. And you hear it a lot, that people figure it out after being married for a couple of years.

And about the nurture stuff. I know two brothers. The oldest is 2 years older then me, he's too active and wants to 'bang' every girl he sees. (he used to be like that, he grew up now lol). The youngest was 2 years younger then me. He was more the quiet type, always the good kid. His brother always was like "Come on, do something bad, it's ok I do it too!". Those two were totally diffrent, but they grew up in the same situation, in the same house, with the same parents. A while ago the youngest find out he is gay, and the oldest is living together with his girlfriend.
Now, I can't see how his education made that boy gay. I believe it just was in his nature.

but thats the thing, is God said a long time ago that was a rule(i havnt found that other verse yet, sorry).  its not a new thing.

and also God doesnt judge people on wether they are good or bad.  you get into Heaven by being a Christian.  there is no other way.  you can be the nicest most perfect person on earth but if Jesus Christ doesnt live in your heart when you die you are going to hell.

I'm looking forward to hell, lol Wink.

I just got one thing to say: God didn't write the bible, people did. They wrote down what their interpretation was of 'God'. I don't share that interpretation completely.

This whole topic could get messy WinkWink

I don't know what to think about how people turn Bi or Gay, it's just that they do, but it's not un comman for some creatures to be gay, don't eve tell me your dog hasn't tried to hump another dog of the same sex!!

And about how teenagers say they are gay for attention is wrong, as a teenager myself i think that if people say they are gay then you can't say there saying it for attention, well maybe they are, but in my mind i don't think they are, i mean if a "popular" kid talks about being gay then everyone will take the mick out of him

Then that brings me to another point, about how people use the term being "Gay" as a bad thing, as i think its absoulty terrible take the mick owtta people sexuality because they are different to others, being gay isn't a bad thing! I wouldn't say it's normal because it isn't natural (just think of how they please themselves, there using part of their digestive system!!) but how people turn all homophobic around them is really bad practise for life, they are still the same person as they were before. In my mind, all homophobic people should have something very bad happen to them! =)

Alright.. I'm not the debating type with this kind of stuff, but what I know is that God spoke through these writers to give us the big picture that the Bible makes. In Leviticus, God had given instructions concerning interpersonal relations and morality reflecting God's holiness. This was to prepare Israel for a life that would be different than the Canaanites. The Canaanites had been living immorally. All of these instructions were there in order to explain how to purify yourself and lead a holy life. I personally feel that there are many unknown reasons as to why a person would be gay, but I do not think that alone causes them to be looked down upon in the eyes of God. Others may have different feelings on this than I do, but I feel that as long as a person isn't promiscuous in their homosexuality it isn't wrong.

i think that thats what a lot of people feel.  but deadarms right, God told people what to write, they didnt come up with it themselves.  dont worry, im not going to try to change your mind especially since im not the judge.

i dont think people choose to be gay. why would someone choose to be like that when so many people wanna keep them from getting married? i also dont think its wrong, because if God made them that way, why would he not want people to be homosexuals? idk if any of that made sense but it made sense in my head. lol.
btw ben, u said u were sorta homophobic(someone afraid of homosexuals) and then u said u werent afraid of them. haha. talk about hippocritical winking =P
